Here’s What We Know About the iPhone SE 4 So Far
The iPhone SE 4 will likely be Apple’s next affordable iPhone. Unlike the last three iPhone SE models that only had small incremental upgrades, the fourth addition could actually be worth the hype, given the big improvements we expect it to bring.
Here, we sum up all the credible rumors and leaks about the iPhone SE 4 and details such as its expected release date, price, design, specs, and features.
iPhone SE 4 Design and Renders
Using information from an anonymous source to leaker Jon Prosser, 3D artist Ian Zelbo created video renders (see video below) that show what the iPhone SE 4 could look like.
According to the renders and various other sources, including Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the iPhone SE 4 will feature a redesigned 6.1-inch OLED display with the good ol’ notch at the top—heavily resembling the design of the iPhone XR from 2018.
This means no more inferior LCD panels, physical Home button, and huge bezels. The iPhone SE 4 will finally look (somewhat) like a modern smartphone rather than a lousy throwback and should compare to Android mid-rangers.
iPhone SE 4 Specs and Features
Seeing that the iPhone 14 didn’t get the A16 Bionic chip, it’d be foolish to assume that Apple will give the iPhone SE 4 its latest chip when the device launches. So, it’ll probably have the standard iPhone 14’s A15 Bionic chip with a 5-core GPU. But if it launches much later than expected, it might get the iPhone 14 Pro’s A16 Bionic instead.
The iPhone SE 4 likely won’t get Face ID, Always-On Display, Night mode, or Cinematic mode, especially if Apple wants to keep the costs low. But it’s likely to have 128GB base storage and, based on its release date, a USB-C port.
Apple is also expected to use an in-house 4nm 5G modem (with sub-6GHz bands) instead of supplying it from Qualcomm. This aligns with a CNBC report wherein Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon said the company has no plans to provide Apple 5G modems in 2024.
“We’re making no plans for 2024, my planning assumption is we’re not providing [Apple] a modem in ’24, but it’s their decision to make.”
iPhone SE 4 Release Date and Price
Unlike the regular iPhone lineup that Apple refreshes annually, the iPhone SE series doesn’t really have a fixed launch schedule. The original iPhone SE came out in March 2016, but it took four years for Apple to launch its successor in April 2020 and only two years to further refresh it in March 2022. This, of course, is a very deliberate choice.
Apple wants the iPhone SE series to remain out of the limelight so it doesn’t take away too much attention from the more expensive flagships. An irregular launch schedule helps the lineup become more forgettable, so people don’t think much about it and potentially downgrade to a cheaper iPhone. The latest rumors suggest the iPhone SE 4 could launch in March 2024.
Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo tweeted in February 2023 that Apple has “restarted the iPhone SE 4”, just weeks after hinting at a potential cancelation in a Medium post.
The price of the iPhone SE 4 is expected to remain more or less unchanged. Both the iPhone SE 1st generation and 2nd generation launched for $399, and the current iPhone SE 3rd generation bumped the price only slightly to $429—hinting at Apple’s intent to keep the series affordable. However, a design refresh with a 6.1-inch OLED display could change that practice.
The iPhone SE 4 Could Be Worth the Wait
Given that our biggest complaint with older iPhone SE models has been the outdated design, a modern-looking iPhone SE 4 will certainly help make the device more competitive against Android mid-rangers. That said, remember that everything we’ve discussed here is speculation at this point, so take it with a pinch of salt.
