Samsung releases first update for the Galaxy S23 series

Samsung‘s Galaxy S23 phones are receiving their first software update. It appears to be a fairly large firmware release. The rollout began recently in Europe. The company should bring the new release to global markets, including the US, over the next few days.

The first update for the Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23+, and Galaxy S23 Ultra is rolling out with the firmware build number S91*BXXU1AWBD in Europe (via). The package weighs more than 560MB for the Ultra model. The other two models should also be getting updates of a similar size. However, Samsung’s changelog mentions nothing. It just tells us that the devices are getting the February security patch, which contains more than 50 vulnerability fixes. These include patches for at least five critical flaws.

Samsung notes that the update may also automatically install the latest versions of some stock apps, such as Samsung Notes, Samsung Health, and SmartThings. But considering the size of this firmware release, there may be more. Perhaps the comedy is seeding some software optimizations. It often does that, rolling out optimizations shortly after new phones hit the market. If you have purchased the latest Galaxy flagships, a major update is already on your way.

Galaxy S23 phones get their first update

Samsung unveiled the Galaxy S23 series on February 1 and immediately started taking pre-orders for the devices. The new Galaxy flagships recently started reaching early buyers as general sales opened on February 17. Now, the company has started pushing the first update to the trio. Many buyers will likely have the update waiting for them out of the box.

If you’re upgrading from a Galaxy, you probably know the drill when it comes to installing updates. But if you’re new to the Samsung ecosystem, let us tell you how. It’s a fairly simple process. In most cases, you will get a notification once the OTA (over-the-air) rollout hits your Galaxy S23 unit. Simply tap on the notification and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the update process.

Alternatively, you can open the Settings app and go to the Software update menu to check for updates manually. Here, tap on Download and install to see if a new OTA release is available. If not, wait a few days and repeat the steps.

Note that Samsung doesn’t support Android’s Seamless Updates. So you cannot use the phone throughout the update process. Depending on the size of the update, it may take 5-10 minutes before the phone is usable again.
