The 5 Weirdest Products We Saw at MWC 2023


Tech exhibitions are usually filled with exciting new devices we expect to come out every year. However, they’re also places where companies can experiment and see consumer reactions before investing more into a new product they’re trying.

So, did we see anything weird and surprising at MWC 2023? Check out our list below and blow your mind.

1. Huawei Watch Buds

Many people like to use true wireless stereo (TWS) earbuds on the go. However, the need to carry a separate device for your listening enjoyment is inconvenient. And if you forget your earbuds while charging, you’ll have to go through the rest of the day without music.

So, to help solve this issue, Huawei introduced the Watch Buds. This device is a Huawei smartwatch with TWS earphones hidden behind its 1.43-inch AMOLED screen. Although the earbuds are small, they deliver an excellent listening experience. They’re equipped with active noise cancelation, wear detection, and other features you’d similarly find on bigger TWS devices.

You save on space and weight by incorporating the smartwatch and earbuds into one seamless device. Furthermore, you’re less likely to leave one or the other behind, especially if you’re used to wearing a smartwatch. So, with the Huawei Watch Buds, you can ensure you can listen to your tunes or podcasts anytime you’re on the go.

However, given their particularly small size, the battery of the TWS will likely be terrible. Hopefully, Huawei has conducted some of its magic to give listeners decent battery life to enjoy their sounds without needing to recharge frequently.

2. Xiaomi 12S Ultra Concept

Back in 2013, Samsung introduced the Galaxy Camera­—a point-and-shoot camera attached to a smartphone. Although its image quality was way better than what you got from smartphones during that era, the inconvenience of lugging around a bulky phone meant it did not take off.

Xiaomi aims to change this with Xiaomi 12S Ultra Concept. But instead of having a bulky lens system permanently attached to the back of the phone, it came with a removable Leica lens. This allowed the phone to stay slim when you’re not using its camera. And then, when you want to shoot high-quality images, you can attach the lens as needed.

Furthermore, the Xiaomi 12S Ultra Concept also features two other cameras that don’t require a bulky lens, allowing you to shoot images quickly when needed.

Although we still don’t know if this phone will go into production, it’s an excellent alternative for photographers who want to lug around one less device, edit their images straight on the phone, and share them with the world quickly.

3. OnePlus 11 Concept

As smartphones grow more powerful each year, so does their heat output. This can lead to thermal throttling and reduced performance, especially if you use your phone for intense gaming and other demanding tasks.

OnePlus wants to solve this issue with the OnePlus 11 Concept—a smartphone with liquid cooling inside its body. Using liquid cooling, OnePlus hopes to more effectively remove heat from the SoC and release it to the environment.

Although some argue that this isn’t effective without active cooling, like a fan, it still delays thermal throttling. This allows its users to push the phone further and allow it to cool down even faster.

Again, this is just a concept phone. But if OnePlus can find a way to make this more effective, we might look at a future with more phones that could act as powerful gaming computers—like the way Samsung DeX did for productivity computing.

4. Motorola Rizr

Samsung introduced some of the most popular folding phones in the Z Fold and Z Flip series. However, foldable aren’t perfect—they’re thick and susceptible to damage, especially at the hinges.

But with Motorola Rizr, you get a larger device with a rollable screen instead of a folding one. The MUO team on the ground at MWC had a hands-on preview of the prototype Motorola Rizr, showing how it rolls out to reveal a larger screen.

However, it’s still early days, and the device has many issues that the team pointed out. We’re hoping Motorola fixes all these things so that when the Motorola Rizr goes on the market, it can avoid the teething problems that many new technologies experience when first introduced.

Both Qualcomm and MediaTek are racing to launch a chip that could allow smartphones to communicate directly with satellites. However, these are chips that smartphone makers must buy and install on future smartphone models.

Weird Tech Today, Regular Tech Tomorrow

All these new tech products on offer at MWC blow our minds. And while some might never be released, others could soon become part of our everyday lives. After all, the ultra-fast charging batteries, foldables, and high-quality camera phones we have today were once concepts, too.
