Domestic Travel Recovery in the USA

International consulting company Oliver Wyman published a new report on 5 April that predicts US domestic air travel will normalize by 2022. International and business travel to return to pre-Covid levels one year later. As Tom Stalnaker, Oliver Wyman’s global aviation practice leader, says: “A year ago, we would have thought that a full domestic recovery in this timeframe for the US was almost impossible, but the combination of pent-up demand, economic stimulus, and access to vaccines is making a difference. We are still far from a full recovery for the overall industry, but we expect some airlines to start turning cash-flow positive in a matter of months, particularly in the US.

Domestic Travel Recovery in Australia

Qantas Airways, Australia’s national airline, sees signs of a sustained recovery in air travel due to a rise in domestic travel activity and a travel bubble with New Zealand. The airline expects to reach 90% of its pre-Covid-19 domestic capacity by the end of June 2021.

The Australian government unveiled a $928 million tourism support package aimed at boosting local travel. The Prime Minister said the package’s mix of half-price airline tickets, cheap loans for businesses, and direct support to keep planes in the air and airline workers in their jobs would be a bridge to a more normal way of life for Australians.
